PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Jesus, What Does this Mean?

10-Then the disciples came and asked him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”

11- He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. (NRSV:UE, Matthew 13:10-11)

July 12-26, the gospel readings are all parables. Parables are a wonderful tool for teaching, but as we hear in the verses above, they are not simple answers. Parables, as used in the time of the ancient rabbis, were used to offer an entrance into a complex situation. There are many places in our lives where we can respond in multiple ways, and we want a simple answer to the complex reality. Parables also serve to reflect values and possibilities without one person attacking another. Jesus uses parables to help his listeners look at complex situations and find themselves and others in the story. As you hear these parables read or read them yourself, reflect on what character you place yourself in. Are you always placing yourself in the “hero” role? Are you choosing to place yourself in the humblest role? Are you unable to see yourself in any part of the story? The joy of parables is that they can also fit multiple situations. When Jesus explains the parables to the disciples, he uses them to help explain the nature of sharing the Good News and how the Kingdom of God works.

If you would like to read ahead and reflect on the parables in July, they will be the following: July 12: Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 July 19: Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 July 26: Matthew 13:31-33, 44-52 Enjoy the creativity of the parables and let your minds ponder what they are telling you.

Peace,

Pastor Diana Thompson

We are a community
of faith that has been worshiping, learning, serving, and socializing for over 100 years.

The beautiful stained glass window sanctuary is accessible to all, and we encourage children to worship there as well or utilize the professionally staffed nursery.  Communion is an important part of all Sunday services, and all who believe are invited to partake in the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.  We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Come back to our website often, as we are making updates weekly. For even more information you can download this month's Bethany News below.

Whether you are returning or visiting for the first time, we are excited to have you join us.
